Actor/activist Sean Penn has hit back at Wyclef Jean's allegations that he was "too busy sniffing cocaine" to notice the rapper's contributions on the ground to Haiti, shortly after an earthquake devastated Sean Penn criticized Wyclef's failed bid to run for the President of Haiti in the upcoming November elections.
the country in January.
Jean was barred from the elections because he did not meet the country's residency requirements, which call for any candidate to live in the country for five-consecutive years.
But event before Wyclef was banned, Penn blasted the rapper in the media, questioning the former Fugee's group member's motivations and his alleged excessive display of wealth in the country.
"This is somebody who’s going to receive an enormous amount of support from the United States, and I have to say I’m very suspicious of it, simply because he, as an ambassador at large, has been virtually silent," Penn said on Larry King Live. "For those of us in Haiti, he has been a non-presence.
Wyclef replied during a performance at Hot 97's On Da Reggae Tip on Friday (September 3rd).
During a rendition of his 2004 song "President," Wyclef accused Penn of missing his efforts in the country, because Penn was "too busy snorting cocaine."
"Mr. Jean is clearly unfamiliar with the physical demands put upon volunteers in Haiti," a representative for Sean Penn said in a statement. "As aid workers there, the notion of depleting the body's immune system thru the use of illicit drugs is ludicrous."
The statement strongly denounced Wyclef's claim that Penn uses the drug and stated that the actor's organization, the J/P Haitian Relief Organzation, had a zero-tolerance policy for drug use.
"As the leader of this organization, Sean Penn has not only set this policy, but adheres to it," Penn's representative said. "That Mr. Jean would make such a false accusation is reckless and saddening, but not surprising."
